Interesting article

Hi there

I came across this article whilst browsing the web and thought i would post it on here as i think it is very interesting and probably raises a few reasons for regular carpet cleaning that you may not have considered.
Carpets are a nice addition to any home, bringing together color schemes and design elements, adding warmth and comfort to the floor, and making any room more inviting. What lies beneath that carpet, however, can be an entirely different story. Dust mites, fungus, pesticides, and even bacteria and viruses may lurk beneath the soft, warm surface of that beautiful carpet and each has potentially serious health consequences.

Dirty carpets can lead to indoor air pollution. Each square yard of carpet can house as many as 100,000 dust mites. Allergens like pet dander and pollen may even be tracked in from outside. Even clean homes and offices can have mold spores in their carpets.

Poor indoor air quality caused by mold, and dust mites can affect anyone, leading to coughs, nose and throat irritation, headache, sneezing, red watery eyes, and dry itchy skin. For those with asthma, respiratory illnesses, or weakened immune systems, the health consequences of indoor air pollution can be serious. Long-term exposure to the indoor air pollution caused by dirty carpets can cause bronchitis, sinusitis, asthma, and other respiratory conditions.

Chemical exposure can also occur due to dirty carpeting. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that as much as 80% of human pesticide exposure happens indoors. Not only can pesticides be tracked in on people's shoes from the outside, they may also be used around the home. Anything sprayed into the air will eventually settle back onto the floor where babies and pets may play.

Pesticide exposure can create a number of health hazards for people. Minor exposure to pesticides can lead to skin and eye irritation. Heavy exposure can lead to more serious health consequences, such as hormone disruption and an increased risk of cancer, according to the EPA.

Carpets can also get dirty when outdoor grime and bacteria are tracked indoors, or when accidents occur indoors. The mess left by animals, sickness, and spills may contain fecal bacteria or viruses that can lead to further sickness, infection, and amoebiasis. Of course these messes are cleaned up as they happen, but fluids can sink deep within the fibers of the carpet where only professional carpet cleaning machines can reach.

Regular vacuuming may clean up the visible dirt, but only a professional cleaning will reduce the health risks from the biological and chemical pollutants that hide in carpet. Professional carpet cleaning machines can get beyond the surface dirt to clean deep within the fibers of the carpet, removing dust and mold spores, dust mites, and bacteria that can make your family sick.

Professional carpet cleaning machines use hot water extraction or steam cleaning to kill dangerous viruses, bacteria, and dust mites. Rotary devices work a cleaning solution deep within the carpet pile to loosen debris and dissolve embedded grime. The process is completed with a powerful vacuum machine that suctions the solution and dirt from deep within the carpet. Carpets are left softened, freshened, and most importantly, free of harmful bacteria, dust, and mold spores that can damage the residents' health.

Well what did you think? interesting or not? let me know.

I am off to walk the dog, its a lovely sunny day but a bit cold.

Tony
